For accessing and setting up the VPN for your windows computer in the Netgear router, follow the below mentioned steps in order to complete the setup process.

  • Open the web browser on your PC and enter the web address of or IP in the URL bar.
  • Enter the router’s login username and password for which the default values are “admin” and “password” respectively. Both these values are case sensitive in nature and you need to be cautious about those while entering in the required fields.
  • Upon logging into the router admin setup page, select the ADVANCED>Advanced setup tab and then click the VPN Service tab.
  • Then click the check box against the Enable VPN service and select the Apply tab.
  • Specify your VPN credentials on the VPN service window and click the “For Windows” tab. This will lead to the Open VPN file download on your computer system.
  • The Windows operating systems require the Open VPN tool to run the VPN service.

  • Once you have downloaded the Open VPN.exe file from the above link mentioned, launch the setup file and the Windows installer will start to install this Open VPN on your computer device.

  • Unzip the configuration files that you downloaded and copy them to a folder where the VPN client is installed on your device.
    For a user computer system with Windows 64-bit system, the VPN client is installed at C:\Programfiles\OpenVPN\config\by default.
  • For client-based systems with the Windows Operating system, change the VPN interface name to NETGEAR-VPN:
  • On your computer device, go to the Networks page and select the following set of tabs Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center > Change adapter settings.
  • In the local area connection list, look out for the local area connection with the device name TAP-Windows Adapter.
  • Select the local network connection and modify its name to NETGEAR-VPN. It is to be noted that its device’s name doesn’t need to be changed but only the local area connection name needs to be changed.
